Helen Jameson, Senior Project Manager (Offshore)
I entered the industry a little by chance. I was working as a consultant at the time and saw an advert for a position at Vattenfall and thought ‘I can do that’.
Day to day my job is to develop offshore wind farm projects. In any project you will have a wide range of skills and experts helping to shape it – environmental, technical, financial, commercial and planning specialists, legal and communications advisers, engineers and risk analysts. Pulling all of this effort together and coordinating to make sure we are delivering a well thought out wind farm that is commercially viable and minimising impacts is my job.
Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing society in the 21st century and I wanted to be part of the transition to renewable energy generation. It makes me proud.
To anyone out there who’d like to get into the industry, I’d say have confidence in your abilities and seek out advice from others working in the industry (women and men). Decide what you really want to do and be active in your attempts to achieve it. It might not go exactly to plan, but if you care about the job you do it makes the hard work much more worthwhile.
Feminism means different things to different people, it’s not about feminist stereotypes, bra burning (unless that’s your thing of course) or prioritising career over everything else in life. Make up your own mind about what being a feminist means to you.
