The Kentish Flats Extension (“KFE”) is Kent’s newest wind farm and was constructed in summer 2015, ten years after construction of the existing Kentish Flats Wind Farm.
KFE lies more than 7km off the coast of Herne Bay and Whitstable and covers an area of approximately 7.8km².
The 15 3.3MW Vestas turbines have a maximum capacity of 49.5MWand are capable of generating up to 173,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean electricity every year – this is equivalent to the total annual electricity requirements of just over 35,000 UK households*. These turbines are taller than their neighbouring turbines and are capable of generating in lower wind speeds.
Although our wind turbines have a 50 metre safety exclusion zone in place, water users are able to transit through the site and fishermen are also able to fish inside our Kent wind farms.
