Kent is home to three of our offshore wind farms – Thanet, Kentish Flats and Kentish Flats Extension. Together they produce enough electricity annually to power more than 400,000 UK homes.
We are currently progressing the development of Thanet Extension Offshore Wind Farm, bringing the next generation of wind energy technology to this Kent cluster.
Powering UK Homes
Since our first Kent Wind Farm – Kentish Flats – was build a decade ago, offshore wind has become an affordable, reliable and vital part of the UK energy system. By 2030, 30GW of offshore wind is expected to be installed in the UK - enough to power XX% of UK homes.
Turbine technology has developed rapidly in this time, bringing down cost and boosting productivity. As a result, with just 34 turbines Thanet Extension Offshore Wind Farm could more than double the capacity of the existing 100 turbine Thanet Offshore Wind Farm.
Security of supply
Renewable energy sources like wind energy make up XX% of the UK’s energy mix. The way the grid is managed is adapting to this changing energy mix with high tech, innovative solutions like the 22MW battery at Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm (LINK).
These innovations are helping to ensure that we have a secure energy supply whilst reducing our carbon emissions as we work towards a fossil free future within a generation. This is Vattenfall’s goal.
