Suction bucket jacket foundations

The EOWDC will deploy a novel foundation type, a three legged jacket foundation with suction buckets, to support each of the eleven wind turbines.

How do they work?

When the air and sea water is pumped out of the suction buckets, the foundations will be anchored in the seabed, keeping the turbines securely in place. This is a virtually noiseless process.

When the project is decommissioned the installation process will be reversed, removing the whole foundation.

The suction bucket jacket foundations are due to be installed in Q1 2018 using the Asian Hercules III, one of the world’s largest floating cranes.

The first two arrived in Peterhead Port on 22nd March. Here is a short film clip.

On Sunday 25th March 2018, Asian Hercules III successfully installed the first of 11 suction bucket jacket foundations. You can see part of installation in action in the short clip below.
